The purpose of the app is to help users gain a deeper understanding of agriculture’s significance in the Golden State. It aims to highlight the economic and nutritional benefits of agriculture, providing users with valuable information about the crops grown in their county and their importance to California’s economy and food system.
How was the app funded?
Funding for Knowin’ What’s Growin’ was made possible by a grant/cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the USDA.
What is a specialty crop?
Specialty crops are fruits and tree nuts, vegetables, herbs and spices, nursery, floriculture, and horticulture crops. They’re commodities that are not considered staple foods. California produces more than 400 different commodities, many of which are specialty crops.
How are the top three specialty crops determined for each county?
The top three specialty crops for each county are determined using agricultural production statistics provided by the county’s agricultural commissioner’s office. These statistics are compiled annually into a county crop report, which identifies the most significant crops based on factors like acreage, yield, and market value.

This information is then used to identify the county in which the user is located. Based on the user’s location, the app provides relevant information about the top three specialty crops grown in that county, allowing users to learn more about agriculture in their local area.

To enable location services on your device, follow these steps:
- For iOS (iPhone/iPad):
- Go to your device’s Settings.
- Scroll down and tap on “Privacy.”
- Tap on “Location Services.”
- Toggle the switch to turn on Location Services.
- You can also customize location settings for individual apps from this menu.
- For Android Devices:
- Open your device’s Settings.
- Scroll down and tap on “Location.”
- Toggle the switch to turn on Location Services.
- You can also adjust location accuracy and permissions for individual apps from this menu.
Once location services are enabled on your device, the app will be able to access your location to provide relevant information about specialty crops grown in your area.

Yes, the app offers offline features. Users can access the “grown-up resources” section, where they can find printable resources, activity pages, and more.
Can I manually input my location if I don’t want to use geolocation services?

You can find out which county you are in and then either enter the county name in the search bar or click on the county within the map of California provided in the app. This allows you to access information about the top three specialty crops grown in that specific county.

BADGES AND REWARDS
How do I earn badges?
To earn badges, users need to correctly answer questions about the crops grown in each county. As users engage with the app and provide accurate responses to questions related to agriculture, they accumulate badges as recognition of their expertise and understanding of California’s diverse agricultural landscape.
What are the benefits of earning badges?
Earning badges will allow users to keep track of which counties and crops have already been completed.
Can I see a list of available badges and how to earn them?
Go to your profile page using the toolbar (make sure you’re logged in) to view the ‘Completed Crops’ and ‘Completed Counties.’ Badges that are grayed out have not yet been earned. Click on a crop to be directed to the lessons, or click on the county to view its top three specialty crops.

What data does the app collect and how is it used?
The app collects anonymous data related to user interactions, such as quiz responses and usage patterns. No identifying information is connected to the data collected. This information is used solely for internal purposes, including analyzing user engagement and improving the app’s functionality and content. Additionally, the collected data may be used to report project progress to the funding organization, demonstrating the app’s impact and effectiveness in achieving its objectives.

ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT
How do I create a profile?
To create a profile, click on “Profile” in the toolbar and follow the prompts to set up your user profile. Once created, your profile will remain accessible on the device where it was created, allowing you to easily track and contribute to your progress as you engage with the app. Please note that you need to use the same device to resume your progress. You can also choose an avatar to personalize your profile and make it uniquely yours.
Can I use the app without creating a profile?
Yes, you can use the app without creating a profile. However, please note that if you choose not to create a profile, your progress will not be saved. Creating a profile allows you to track your progress and easily resume where you left off.
How can I update my account information or preferences?
This site does not collect any personal user information. Usernames are randomly generated and cannot be updated. Location preferences can be updated using your browser’s location access permissions.
